Makonde people live in a territory stretching from Southern Tanzania to the North of Mozambique, the Makonde are skilled sculptors and their works are very famous and sought after.

The Makonde still perform archaic practices, such as the custom of tattooing the face with geometric motifs and the tradition of inserting a saucer into the upper lip.

The rites and ceremonies of the Makonde are very interesting, if you are lucky enough to attend; during ceremonies, ceremonial masks that represent the forces and spirits of evil are used.
