August 10 is the World Lion Day, a day dedicated to this wonderful animal that unfortunately is at risk of extinction.

It is thought that the population of lions is about 30,000 specimens, but what is worrying is the rate of population decline, numbers have dropped dramatically in recent years, so to put the species on the list of animals in danger.

This mighty animal, the king of the savannah, needs help and this day wants to make us aware of this issue, numbers are shaken, in the last 20 years the population has decreased by 43%; even though a recent research estimates that the decline has been much more drastic in recent years and that the number of specimens present throughout the African continent is no more than 17,000.

The causes of the decline of these proud felines are to be found mainly in the conflict with humans, poaching and the loss of natural habitat.

There are numerous protection and conservation programs that work across Africa to try to stop this silent extinction, that would deprive the world of one of the most beautiful and iconic animals.

Changing is possible, just a simple gesture or a donation to avoid the irreversible damage of the extinction, as Mahatma Ghandi said: be the change you wish to see in the world.
